Help Topics

1) Phone compatibility

Will it work on my phone?

The vast majority of phones on sale today are compatible with the ringtones on MotoMail.co.uk. Here are some basic requirements which your phone will need to meet:

  1. Can play mp3 files
  2. Can access the internet (for example using WAP, GPRS, EDGE, WiFi or 3G)

You can test to see if your phone is compatible by downloading this sample ringtone*:

  1. Sample ringtone - To download this, grab your phone, open up the web browser feature and enter this address: www.motomail.co.uk/sample.mp3 If you're not sure how to do this, please go to Topic 2, or check our basic tutorial

Finally, you may want to check the list of known incompatible phones.

* Please note that your carrier (service provider) may charge you to use the internet on your phone.

2) Getting a ringtone

How do I actually get the ringtones onto my phone?
There are two ways of downloading a ringtone from MotoMail.co.uk. You can either download a ringtone right from your phone, without needing a computer, or you can download a ringtone to your computer first, then move it over to your phone.

Method one, downloading a ringtone using your phone:

  1. Browse MotoMail.co.uk on your computer and find a ringtone you like, for example: http://www.motomail.co.uk/ringtone/5749
  2. Log in or register, free.
  3. On the ringtone's page (the one with the orange preview player), scroll down until you see "Get this ringtone..."
  4. Now you'll see option 1, which asks you to enter a web address (URL) into your phone. To enter this web address, you'll need to open the browser or web application on your phone.
  5. Now the browser is open, look for an address bar, much like the one you see in internet explorer (the bit where you can type www.). You may need to open the browsers menu (for example select "options" or "tools"), and select Go to URL or Go to Web Address.
  6. Now enter the address you have been given and select "Ok" or "Go" etc.
  7. The ringtone should now start to download to your phone. If the phone asks if you want to save/store the file, select yes. The ringtone will take anything from 1 second - 10 minutes to download, depending on what connection you are using (for example 3G or Wi-Fi connections will download faster).
  8. When the ringtone has downloaded, you will be able to assign it as a ringtone. Check your phones manual if you aren't sure how to do this.
  9. If you need any more help, check out this basic tutorial, which includes a demonstration and pictures!
Method two, downloading a ringtone to your computer and transferring it to your phone:
  4. You'll see two options here, follow option 2 and save the ringtone to your computer.
  5. Once the ringtone is saved to your computer, there are a number of methods you can use to transfer it over to your phone. If your computer and phone both have a bluetooth connection, you may be able to use this to transfer the ringtone, alternatively your phone may have been supplied with a cable which connects it to your computer. Please refer to your phone manufacturer's website for more information.

3) Costs

Is it free to download a ringtone?

Downloading ringtones from the MotoMail website is free, but you may be charged by your carrier (service provider), for example T-Mobile or Vodafone, to use the internet on your phone. This is the same for any website and MotoMail.co.uk does not profit from these charges. If you want to avoid any charges from your carrier, you can use method 2, which does not involve using the internet on your phone. This method is completely free, you can download a ringtone like you would any other free file on the internet.

Will I get charged by my carrier for using the internet on my phone?

If you have an Unlimited Data Plan then you will not be charged anything extra for using the internet or downloading files on your phone. However, if you are not on this type of plan your carrier will probably charge you for every MB you download. It usually doesn't cost very much at all, but if you are concerned please check the rates charged by your service provider.

4) Privacy & site content

Is there a subscription or monthly fee involved?
No, absolutely not. MotoMail.co.uk does not charge you anything and you will not be subscribed to anything either.

Will you share my details with anyone?
No. MotoMail.co.uk takes your privacy very seriously. We will never rent, sell, share or pass on information about you to any third parties.

5) Error messages & downloading problems

I'm having problems downloading a ringtone.

  • I can't find the web browser or where to enter a web address: the web browser on your phone may be called "Internet" or something similar, it often has an Icon (usually an 'e' or a globe) on the main menu of your phone. If you can't find where to enter a web address, first open the web browser on your phone and look for an address bar (much like the one you use in Internet Explorer or Safari, the bit where the 'www.' goes), you may have to open it by looking in a sub menu (such as 'Options'). If so, look for something like "Enter web address" or "Go to URL".

Please post in the forums for additional help & advice.

When I try to download a ringtone, I get an error message.

Here are solutions to some common error messages:

  • Error "404" (Address not found): this message usually means you've mis-typed a letter, so please check that the address you entered exactly matches the one given, including all numbers symbols and full stops (.)

You can discuss other error messages in the forums
